## Overview

Artificial intelligence is changing how people interact with enterprise technology. But planning presents a unique challenge: an AI assistant may understand forecasting or analyze a spreadsheet, but it does not automatically understand your company's revenue model, workforce assumptions, business rules, or latest forecast. That gap between **AI intelligence and business context** has been one of the biggest barriers to using generative AI for serious enterprise planning.

**Pigment's Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server helps bridge that gap.**

By connecting Pigment with AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude, MCP gives AI assistants access to the governed data, models, metrics, and business logic maintained within Pigment. The result is more significant than simply being able to ask AI about a forecast. It changes how people can interact with the planning environment itself.

## What Is Pigment MCP?

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard that provides a common way for AI systems to connect with external tools and data sources. Pigment applies that concept to enterprise planning. Instead of exporting data, uploading spreadsheets, and explaining the meaning of individual metrics to an AI assistant, authorized users can connect supported AI systems to Pigment's planning environment.

Through MCP, AI can work with live planning data, metrics, hierarchies, models, and business logic while Pigment's existing permissions continue to govern what each user can access. In other words, MCP does not simply give AI **more data**. It gives AI **business context within a governed framework**.

## From Reports and Dashboards to Conversations

Consider a common planning workflow.

A business leader notices an unexpected expense variance. An analyst opens the planning model, identifies the relevant data, validates the numbers, performs additional analysis, and communicates the findings back to leadership. With AI connected to governed planning data, that interaction can become much more conversational.

A leader could ask:

**"What's driving our marketing expense variance this quarter?"**

Then:

**"Which departments contributed most?"**

And:

**"If the trend continues, what could the year-end impact look like?"**

The value is not simply natural-language querying. It is **natural-language interaction with governed planning logic**. Dashboards and reports do not disappear, but they may no longer be the only way users interact with planning information.

## What Changes for FP&A?

This shift could have a significant impact on FP&A. Finance teams often serve as intermediaries between business leaders and financial information, spending valuable time answering questions about forecasts, headcount, expenses, variances, and budgets. If business users can securely explore governed planning information themselves, some of that work can become self-service.

That gives FP&A more time to move beyond:

**"What happened?"**

and focus on:

**"Why does it matter?"**

**"What should we change?"**

**"Which scenario should we evaluate next?"**

AI does not replace FP&A expertise. It can help move that expertise toward higher-value analysis and decision support.

## Scenario Planning Becomes More Accessible

MCP could also make scenario planning easier for a broader group of business users. Instead of requiring someone to understand the structure of a complex planning model, conversational AI provides a more intuitive interface.

Imagine asking:

**"What happens if revenue finishes 5% below forecast while hiring continues according to plan?"**

or:

**"What would delaying planned hires by one quarter do to operating expenses?"**

The structured planning model still performs the calculations. AI simply provides another way to interact with it. That distinction is important.

**ChatGPT and Claude do not become the planning system.**

Pigment remains the environment for structured models, assumptions, calculations, permissions, and business logic. AI becomes another interface into that governed environment.

A simple way to think about the architecture is:

## Why Governance Matters Even More

Connecting AI to enterprise planning also increases the importance of governance. Organizations need to determine which data should be accessible through AI, who should have access, how permissions are structured, and where human review remains necessary. And MCP cannot compensate for poor planning fundamentals. Bad source data, inconsistent definitions, weak models, or unclear assumptions do not become better simply because AI can access them. In fact, AI may expose those problems faster.

Organizations therefore need to think about AI readiness as more than selecting an AI model. They also need **data readiness, planning readiness, and governance readiness**.

## The Bigger Opportunity: Business Context

As ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI platforms become widely available, simply having access to AI will not be much of a competitive differentiator. The real advantage is the **business context connected to it**. An AI system becomes considerably more valuable when it can securely work with an organization's financial structure, operational drivers, workforce assumptions, forecast methodology, scenarios, and business definitions. That is what makes Pigment MCP strategically interesting. The bigger story is not that ChatGPT or Claude can connect to a planning platform. It is that enterprise planning is beginning to move beyond the traditional application interface.

**AI becomes the conversational layer. Pigment provides the governed planning context. MCP connects the two.**

For organizations exploring AI-driven planning, that could significantly shorten the distance between a business question, an insight, and a decision.
